Youth met to prepare for Whitehorse CLYG 2008

This past Sunday, June 22, we got together for potluck supper and did some preparation for our Whitehorse trip. Virgina D. led us in completing our group covenant together. As it says on the form, it is supposed to “represent what we hope to learn, experience, and be responsible for. These are the goals to which we will give our time and energy – before, during and after the Gathering.” Kevin S. led in our pre-trip bible study from Gen. 3:1-24. And we got our 5’ x 3” banner finished, or almost finished. Yeah!! We’ll have to get a picture of our banner online once Erika D. sticks our group photo on it. I feel we are getting things set for this.

The actual dates of the youth gathering is Aug. 14-17. We will be leaving on Mon., Aug. 11 and coming back Wed., Aug. 20 so most of the time seems like it'll be spent on the bus. It's a long bus ride: 3 days there and 3 days back. We'll have to be prepared for a long long bus ride. We have to bring some things to keep ourselves busy on the bus.

Youth gearing up for Whitehorse CLYG 2008

Thursday, June 5, 2008

This is now June 5th and our Youth to Whitehorse have done fundraisers like the Sunday lunch, bottle drive, pasta lunch, muffin sale. Having enough money is great. This is one of the challenging things to prepare for the trip. Now, we’re getting things ready for the 2-legged bus trip: Saskatoon to Edmonton, and Edmonton to Whitehorse.

Virginia D. and Kevin S. as home team leaders, are excited about going with our youth. Kevin is looking forward to getting to Whitehorse but he just hopes the long bus ride won’t kill him before we all arrive in Whitehorse.

Gisele N. has arranged for our bus trip from Saskatoon to Edmonton. Gisele and Dwayne M. have also volunteered to drive everyone down to Saskatoon to catch the bus from there. Everything feels like it’s coming together.

Are there any ideas on how the banner should look like? What lettering?

Youth & young adults enjoyed movie "Hairspray"

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Beth D. suggested that we watch “Hairspray”. We enjoyed this entertaining movie while munching on popcorn, chips, and juice. There were 10 of us who were here: Beth D., Jennifer D., Katie D., Lyndsay, Breanne, Mike R., Kelsey M. and two of her friends, and Kevin S.

Jennifer D. says:

It was nice to gather youth together for a relaxing movie night at the church. It was a way to meet new people and also see familiar faces. The movie touched on weight issues and used a heavier female character to take the role of the heroine, which is uncommon in most Hollywood movies.

Kevin S. says:

The movie was about breaking down racial barriers and was based in the 1960s but it wasn’t an old black & white movie. It was a fun musical type of movie that made you feel good too. The heroine Tracy, showed the world that she could dance not only as good as the other dancers on the dance show but was even better. One of the morals of this movie is that it is what’s on the inside that counts and not the exterior. Tracy, Link, Seaweed, Maybelle went against the grain the try to bring racial integration in a time when segregation was the norm during the 60s.

Tour-de-Kinasao Bikeathon and Walkathon

Thursday, May 1, 2008

I would like to do this Tour-de-Kinasao Bikeathon and Walkathon thing. I haven't committed to it yet but am seriously considering it. It's suppose to help raise money to help support Kinasao Lutheran Bible Camp. Their goal is to raise $30,000. Those who register by May 16th will receive a free T-shirt. Is there anyone else besides Annie M. and I who would like to be a part of this from Messiah? The more the better. Please let me know; email me or phone the church, and also contact Kari A. or Gretchen P. at Camp Kinasao.

Messiah lazer taggers

Thursday, May 1, 2008

We had a really good time last night at Dolly's Fun House. There were about 10 of us who came out for pizza and lazer tag--Erika D., Julie W., Crystal W., Meagan W., Meagan H., Mary, Katie R., Chris R., Riley, Brian, and myself. Rick R. hung out with us too. Several brought friends with you and that was great.

We all had a really fun time shooting each other…safely shooting each other. I never made lazer master but Meagan H. and others did, and I think Julie W. did too. Way to go! If someone else did too, correct me in the comment section and I can add you into the Messiah Lazer Hall of Fame.

Ski trip to Table Mountain

Friday, March 28, 2008

There were a few of us to went to Table Mountain for a skiing--Katie R. and Erika D. and myself. We went skiing with a gathering of Lutheran youths from North Battleford, Saskatoon, Shell Lake, Parkside. It was really fun. It had been a long time since I skied last so I practiced on the bunny hill before moving back to the big hill on the easy trails. After skiing, we went back to the church in North Battleford, had supper, did some games and had worship. We stayed over night and slept on the floor at church, participated in Sunday morning worship and returned home in the afternoon. It got me pumped up again because church can be fun too.

We are set apart to live for Jesus

Thursday, March 27, 2008

We know that Christians are called and challenged to be holy because God is holy. Being holy sounds like a big thing way up in the sky but all it really means is to be “separate”, “to set apart”, or “a being set apart”. We, as Christians, are called out of this sin-filled world to be God's children forgiven by God. A godly life is the trait of genuine Christian behaviour. As Christians who are set apart for God’s service, we are called by the Lord Jesus and given the gift of the Holy Spirit so that we can live righteous and holy lives.

So how do we live holy lives as Christians? All the rules at home, at school and in our society tries to guide us into being obedient to the law so that we don’t hurt others and ourselves. We are taught to live by God’s Ten Commandments in the bible. The law of God is only meant to guide or rule us as “a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path”. This may work to a certain extent but it is not the way we are called to live out our Christian faith because it may be forced on us. With Christ in our lives, we desire to obey God’s rules and laws because we love God. Jesus is the one who makes it all happen for us. We have a relationship with God when we were first baptized into Christ and made one with him. We are in relationship with Christ because He loves us and so we love him.

Without all our human laws and rules, it may seem impossible to live godly and do good works all the time. But the truth is that it is impossible even with all our laws and rules. However, we are blessed that it is God who lives in us who empowers us to live in righteousness. If it were not for the grace of God and the Holy Spirit of God, we would never be able to live in righteousness. The only righteousness we have is God's righteousness. The Holy Spirit has made us holy by bringing us to faith in Jesus Christ, redeemed us, forgiven us, and as our worship to God, we honor God by living holy lives. This is our piety to God.

Allow Holy Spirit to lead us into his righteousness rather than into human righteousness. The cleanse us of all our sins. He came to give us new life, transform our lives, energize us, enlighten our understanding, and strengthen our inner spiritual lives. Then we may be able to live in piety and godliness.
